Alternative presents advantages for titanium, between them bigger biocompatibility the use of a new material promises to revolutionize the area of dental implantations in Brazil. One is about the zirconia, that appears as an alternative, with diverse advantages, for the use of titanium. The research on “the single grain implantation of zirconia”, a ceramic material, is of authorship of two paranaenses professors - Antonio Carrilho Neto, of the State University of Londrina (UEL), and Eliseu Augusto Sicoli, of the State University of the West of the Paraná (Unioeste), in association with the French researcher Thierry Page, of the University of Bordeaux.

The technology, according to Carrilho Neto, already is used in the Europe. In Brazil, the protocol is in phase of approval for the National Agency of Sanitary Monitoring (Anvisa). After four years of research, the results had shown that one of the biggest advantages is the biggest biocompatibility of the material. The implant with zirconia, according to professor of the UEL, has minor risk of rejection in relation to the one of titanium. It explains that he is rare, but the patient who passes for an implantation with titanium runs the risk to have reactions. “Some patients have bigger degree of sensitivity to the metal”, explain.

Its possible to foresee this sensitivity with an examination, that is normally not carried through, according to professor, because of the high cost. But even though the availability makes it difficult the accomplishment of the test - in Londrina, for example, the examination is not available. Already the zirconia, emphasizes Carrilho Neto, does not react with the organism, it does not liberate residues, and therefore it does not propitiate allergic reactions.

The part made in zirconia that will be implanted in the gingival for “hold” the prosthesis of tooth also does not have emendations. During the study, pointed the professor, this if it showed particularly important. In the titanium implantation, despite the emendation being microscopically, its possible that in the long run the fiction is a space for microorganisms in the limit of the gingival and prosthesis.  “This can cause inflammations, gingivite or peri-implant disease, that are the inflammation in the fabric that the implantation keeps”, alert. The technique also is simpler, according to professor, what it allows that the implantation of prosthesis either made with only one surgical procedure. For the patient, this means little time in the doctor's office and little suffering. Another advantage, according to Carrilho Neto, is the aesthetic result, since the done implantation of the zirconia has a color next to the tooth, and does not appear, if the patient will have a problem of gingival retraction in the place. The solution of the problem also is easier, explains the dentist, with one gum grafts. If the same procedure will be made in the case of a titanium implantation, the material of dark color continues appearing, because the gingival is partially translucent. The use of implantations of zirconia, explains the professor, is not only indicated still for extensive treatments of verbal whitewashing, cases of patients whom no tooth does not have. The technique still does not allow, as in the case of titanium, the use of two or three implantations to support prosthesis for all the mouth.

The single grain work on implantations of zirconia was presented in the Cimtec (International Conferences on Modern Materials & Technologies), carried through in June, in Italy. In September, them they wait to present the work in China, during congress of the FDA (American agency of sanitary monitoring).
